CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

ALEX

A lex told himself it wasn’t spying, what he was doing. He had just happened to be upstairs in the cottage when laughter—Annabelle’s laughter—had floated through the open window. It was only natural that he’d been drawn to look outside. It was normal for him to linger there for a moment, watching Olivier and Annabelle play with Scout.

But he stayed there a lot longer than a moment. And the back of his throat burned, like he was trying to hold back tears he didn’t want to admit were there. And his body ached in the places Olivier had touched so possessively, like he wanted to know every part of Alex, to memorize the slope and scape of him.

Eventually, darkness fell and Olivier took Annabelle and Scout inside. Alex tore himself away from the window, wondering how in the world he was going to get through this.

He wished he had someone to talk to. But if he called Hugh and told him that he’d slept with the Prince of Vivion, Hugh was going to lose it. He’d end up driving up here to whisk Alex away and rescue him and Alex would be grateful for it, but it was the coward’s way out, to let his big bad Alpha best friend rescue him from the mess he’d made by falling for the Alpha Prince.

God, how could he have resisted, though? It wasn’t that glittering handsomeness, because of course Olivier was beautiful. He was powerful and sexy and he’d made Alex’s toes curl when he’d scraped his teeth along the back of his neck just so.

But he was so much more than that. More than sexy. More than royalty.

He was a devoted father. A good man, with an earnest mind and a snarky sense of humor and the kind of Alpha you walked the entire world looking for.

Alex had found him. Walked right into a hotel room and there he was. An Alpha you could build a real life with.

But Alex would never have him. Not truly. Not really. Not wholly.

And if he stayed, he knew what would happen. They would both resist for as long as they could, but something would happen—it could be big, it could be small, but it was inevitable—and one of them would break. And if it was Alex breaking, he wouldn’t stop and if it was Olivier breaking, Alex wouldn’t stop him.

He couldn’t be some dirty little secret. And he would never be a side piece.

So he had to go. Tears pricked his eyes as the realization wrapped around his heart like a punishing fist. He couldn’t leave until the tour was over, but he knew from all the servant’s talk that it was almost a sure thing that Olivier would be moving back to Vivion. He’d use that as an excuse to resign after the tour was done. It wouldn’t look amazing on his resume, to leave a job after just a few months, but it was the best he could do. He couldn’t exactly say I fell for my employer when asked why he’d left his last position.
